Updated: 3 days ago

Are you ready to embark on an adventure filled with wagging tails and boundless love? Owning a puppy is undoubtedly a joyous experience, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges. However, fear not! We've discovered the ultimate key to stress-free puppy ownership: crate training dogs. Prepare to unlock the secrets of this powerful training method and transform your furry friend into a well-behaved and contented companion.

What is Crate Training and How Does It Work?

Crate training is the process of teaching your puppy to view a crate as a safe and secure den-like space. This technique leverages a dog's natural instinct to seek shelter and create a personal sanctuary. By introducing a crate as a positive and comfortable space, you provide your pup with their very own retreat, reducing anxiety and promoting good behavior.

The Benefits of Crate Training

a) Promotes Housetraining Success: One of the most significant advantages of crate training is its effectiveness in housetraining your puppy. Dogs naturally avoid soiling their sleeping areas, making the crate an invaluable tool in establishing a consistent routine for bathroom breaks.

b) Enhances Safety and Security: Crate training ensures the safety and security of your puppy when you cannot supervise them. It prevents them from engaging in destructive behaviors or accessing potentially dangerous areas in your home.

c) Facilitates Travel and Vet Visits: Crate-trained dogs are more comfortable and secure during travel and vet visits. Familiarity with their crate provides a sense of stability in unfamiliar environments, reducing stress and promoting a positive experience for both you and your pup.

How to Crate Train Your Dog - Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Introducing the Crate:

Begin by introducing the crate as a positive space. Place it in a quiet area of your home, and gradually encourage your puppy to explore and enter the crate using treats, toys, or a comfortable bed.

Step 2: Mealtime in the Crate:

Associate positive experiences with the crate by feeding your puppy their meals inside. This creates a positive association and reinforces the idea that the crate is a safe and rewarding space.

Step 3: Gradual Enclosure:

Once your pup is comfortable entering the crate, start closing the door for short periods while you're present. Gradually increase the duration to help your puppy adjust to being enclosed.

Step 4: Alone Time and Nighttime Routine:

Build up your pup's tolerance to being alone in the crate by gradually extending the time spent inside while you're in the home then while you're away. This step is crucial for preventing separation anxiety. For nighttime, place the crate in your bedroom initially or sleep on downstairs near to the puppy to ease your puppy's transition, and later move it to a desired location.

What our clients say

Trained Labrador Puppy. Black Labrador puppy which is a trained dog after completing puppy training at Puppy Steps

Lucy Lovell

"I was initially apprehensive, but we've been so happy with all Puppy Steps services and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Andy and his team! I followed the Fb posts for a few months, asked lots of questions and when the time was right I spoke to Andy at length and booked a place to find a puppy and train her. His experience helped to find a good litter and he helped us choose our puppy via video clips.

At 7 months now Frida is the calmest dog, with a wonderful temperament thanks to great training - a joy to have in our family. We'll definitely go back to Puppy Steps if we ever decide to have another puppy."

"I contacted Andy @ puppy steps after reading the reviews and testimonials on the website. I spoke to Andy a number of times at length as I wasn’t sure the type of puppy that would suit our family. Andy found and trained our beautiful cocker spaniel Harper. She is a delight. Obedient, calm and super friendly. From day one everyone comments on how calm and well behaved she is. Slept all night from day one with no accidents. I would recommend Andy and his team in a heartbeat. I have called Andy since to get advice and guidance and he is always happy to help. Harper is nearly 8 months now and the best decision we ever made."

Linda and Mike, Aoife's owners

We have wanted our own dog for many years but with both of us working full time, it just wasn't possible. A mutual friend told me about Andy, so I contacted him to ask about the unique service he was offering. We had two in depth telephone conversations about our lifestyle, which breed would suit us, his experience with dogs, and the training he was offering etc. Yesterday we went to view one of Andy's puppies, a little black Cocker Spaniel. She was absolutely adorable, so tiny but full of beans. Andy is extremely knowledgable, he answered all our questions, and gave us plenty of advice and encouragement. We spent some time with Andy and his wife Lucy and two beautiful children, Harry and Libby. They made us feel very much at home, they are both so easy to talk to, even though it was our first meeting it felt like we had known them for ever. Andy is a great person, so professional, with extremely high principles. There was no pressure to adopt the puppy, we all needed to make sure it was the correct thing for all concerned. Fortunately they must have liked us too, because Andy and Lucy agreed that we were going to be responsible dog owners, who would give their puppy the home it deserved. We're collecting our puppy now named Aoife (pronounced - eefa) at the beginning of December.
Andy is offering an exceptional service, his passion and enthusiasm is phenomenal, and I would thoroughly recommend Andy to anyone who thought they couldn't take on a puppy. Exciting times ahead!!
